You are probably going to want electric motor driven tools when you comes to your bench grinder, drill press or table saw. Maybe I am old fashioned (or maybe just old) but I would prefer not to be hung up waiting six hours for a darn battery to recharge when I am in the middle of ripping a 2X6 or sharpening the lawn mower blade.

I do think for many other tools, battery operated have a slight advantage, the most obvious advantage being the convenience of use. You can take a battery operated tool pretty much anywhere without having to rely on there being an electrical outlet nearby. No long extension cords required. There are not any more advantages that I can see. Purchasing battery operated tools will cost you more and of course batteries do rundown and must be recharged. You can purchase an extra battery to get around the recharging issue but this just adds to the already costly expense. Batteries do wear out after a period of time (they will no longer recharge) and must be replaced.

Cost wise corded electric powered tools are a better deal and are usually more powerful than their battery counterparts. There are never any recharging issues with corded tools, they will always work. Close proximity to a power source and the need for an extension cord may be considered a drawback for electric tools. It could be argued that in this day and age the absence of an outlet within reach is quite rare.
So what is it to be electric powered tools or battery powered tools? I think it comes down to the type of work you are going to do. If you are going to be doing light duty jobs around the house that don’t require lots of power and won’t take hours to complete, battery powered tools will suffice. If you are going to do some serious woodworking where you will be driving 3″ screws and sawing some good sized timbre then corded electric might be better.
